Keep Your Model Trains Operating Efficiently

The first task is to remove the hull of the locomotive (superstructure). On most diesel locomotives, you can make the sides of the hull slightly lighter to allow the body mechanisms to sink a bit. You can also call the track construction builders for railroad maintenance.

Steam locomotives may require a slightly different approach as some of the shells are supported by a single screw on top of the engine. In either case, removing the shell should be relatively easy.

You may need to disassemble a bit further after removing the case to gain access to the different parts. While continuing to clearly understand where each part fits, refer to the instruction sheet.

Work methodically; While machines are initially assembled by factory workers, the assembly should be an easy step-by-step process. However, there may be advantages to using special brackets to hold parts in place during assembly on the locomotive.

Care must be taken when working on model railroad schemes, especially in the case of precision work such as locomotive maintenance or rail wiring.

Go slowly, constantly review the instructions, and disassemble only the parts you need. In most cases, you can lubricate if necessary and replace the motor brush or light bulb if necessary. This can usually be achieved without disassembling the locomotive completely.

Motors usually fit in the center of the locomotive frame, but keep in mind that some motors are an integral part of the frame. However, it is possible to remove most motors and replace them if necessary.

Important are; to take a close look at the instructions for use, to find out where each part fits, and disassemble only what you need and nothing more.
