Is Child Care Right For You?

Maybe you're worried about working with children because you know you're short-tempered, maybe you're impatient and maybe you have a criminal record. These are all signs that you need to find a career other than parenting.

Children are our greatest wealth and we want to raise them and bring out the best in them. If you want to help children grow into responsible adults, then consider a career in child care. Remember that even though you love children very much, there will be times when you feel bored.

Starting a Career in Child Care

If you are still in high school or college and considering working in daycare, then get as much experience as possible. The best way to do this is to start parenting.

From there, you can move on to other parenting experiences that will prepare you for work in this field. For example, you could teach Sunday school at a church. You can also volunteer as a class assistant or kindergarten assistant to help you figure out how you want to interact with children.

Many daycare workers have benefited from their summer camp experience. This could be an arts camp, a horseback riding camp, a camp for children with various disabilities, or a camp for everyone, but the camp experience will make you think about working with children in a different way.
